Our Story

Our Story

McConaghy was founded by John McConaghy in 1967, and his passion for innovation led to the introduction of novel materials never before used in marine applications. Over 50 years later, the same passion and attention to detail persists, and McConaghy is now responsible for some of the most impressive composite structures on land or sea.

Our Timeline

8

1967

McConaghy was founded by John McConaghy in 1967, and he set out to build skiffs, Tornado and A-class catamarans from novel materials never before used in marine applications.

9

1970’s

In the mid 1970’s, McConaghy were one of the first to apply prepreg carbon to sailing boat construction. Built using materials previously only seen in aerospace applications, McConaghy’s first 18ft prepreg carbon skiff was a revelation that would set a performance benchmark for years to come.

8

1987

McConaghy constructed the first prepreg nomex cored maxi yacht in 1987, engineered by Giovanni Belgrano and SP Systems, and this yacht was the largest composite structure in the world at that time. McConaghy has been researching, testing and perfecting the techniques and processes required to build high strength, durable and lightweight composite structures ever since.

9

2000

In the year 2000 McConaghy employees Jono Morris and Mark Evans, took over the company reins from founder John McConaghy and his long-time business partner, Steve Moxham.  Mark and Jono capitalised on their complimentary skills and went on to manage the construction of some of the most successful maxi yachts ever built.

8

2002

Alfa Romeo wins Line Honours at the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.

9

2005

McConaghy built the yacht for China Team, the first Chinese challenger for the 150+ old event at that time.

8

2005

Wild Oats XI wins Line Honours and then successively wins 4 races 2005-2008, 7 races in total at the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.

9

2006

In 2006, the company expanded and opened a shipyard in China, which has facilitated exponential growth and supported the production of several semi-custom product ranges.

8

2006

Loki wins Overall Handicap Winner at the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race.

9

2011

The yacht was masterly crafted by McConaghy Boats in record time taking an amazing 62 days to build! The order for the Rolf Vrolijk designed yacht was received in late November 2010, finished on the 8th March 2011.

8

2012

McConaghy was approached in 2010 to assist the explorer-filmmaker James Cameron and his engineering partner, Ron Allum, with the complex construction of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER submersible, a submarine capable of diving to the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific, eleven kilometres down at the deepest part of the worlds oceans.

9

2014

Adastra is the 42.5m trimaran built at McConaghy’s Zhuhai facility, for a HK client. It is the largest vessel we have built to date, and one of the world’s most amazing superyachts, that could spell the future for efficient long range cruising.

9

2014

In 2014, investment was secured from the Hong Kong-based Tiger Group Investments, a prominent commercial marine company led by keen yachtsman Graham Porter.  The partnership with Tiger Group provided capital investment in state-of-the-art facilities, machinery and equipment at McConaghy’s sites in both China and Sydney.

9

2018

First McConaghy catamaran launched in February, 2018.

8

Now
